This resulted in the birth of “Trulli”. A Trulli is a tiny conical-roofed stone house built in a round shape. These houses were created without mortar, by stacking bricks on top of one other, and could be dismantled by removing the middle support. The town remained under feudal authority until 1797 when the residents petitioned the King for permission to be liberated from bondage and declared a free and loyal town. They no longer had to worry about their dwellings being destroyed, so they proceeded to build in the typical Trulli style.
