Castel Sant’Angelo

This was the site of Hadrian’s tomb and other successive emperors until the sack of Rome in 410 AD. The castle was constructed as a military fort but named after the legend that Archangel Michael appeared to be sheathing his sword during a period of intense plague in 590 AD.
